My Approach & Values
Kirsten blends the research-backed Gottman Method Couples Therapy and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy approaches to teach you healthier ways of communicating and being in a relationship together. The work you will do with Kirsten includes identifying and changing your conflict cycle, learning better conflict management tools, expressing needs in a healthy way, building and maintaining a friendship with your partner, and sharing appreciation and affection for one another. She will help you explore negative relationship patterns, past hurts, and underlying issues in a safe and controlled environment where you both can learn how to share vulnerably and truly understand and empathize with each other.
Kirsten is skilled in working with people struggling with addiction. She helps couples and individuals understand the impact of addiction or over-use of substances on their relationship and maintain open communication, connection, and transparency through the recovery process. She is also skilled at helping individuals with depression and helping couples navigate the impact of depression on the relationship.
Kirsten has been working with individuals and couples since 2020 and is currently completing her supervised clinical hours for licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist. This means that when you work with Kirsten, you get the benefit of two therapists collaborating about the best way to help you!
Despite being new to the field of therapy, Kirsten brings many years of life experience into her therapeutic approach. As an individual who has successfully navigated divorce, co-parenting, becoming an empty nester, and beginning a new career midlife, she knows the intricacies, challenges, and emotions that one might experience during such transitions. Having experienced both marriage and divorce followed by healthy relationship training and education in graduate school, Kirsten has a unique and insightful perspective on the research and the reality of making a relationship work. When helpful and appropriate, Kirsten shares her own personal experience with clients so that they may learn from real-life experience in addition to the latest research-backed techniques and information.
