Preferred pronouns: she/hers
Hanna Stensby is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist specializing in Gottman Method Couples Therapy, Divorce & Breakup Recovery, Positive Parenting, and Trauma Recovery. Hanna specializes in working with individuals and couples from an attachment based perspective, meaning she helps clients understand how their early childhood experiences impact their adult romantic relationships. She also utilizes the research-backed Gottman Method for couples therapy to provide tools and education to help couples thrive in their relationships. Combining her extensive training and varied skill set, Hanna will help you use mindfulness, awareness of your body’s cues, and proven communication techniques to help you feel safe to show up whole-heartedly in love and life.
My Approach & Values
Hanna has been working with couples and individuals since 2016 and has advanced training in the areas of Gottman Method Couples Therapy, trauma recovery, and attachment. As a trauma informed therapist who is also a certified yoga instructor, Hanna believes in the importance of the mind-body connection when healing past attachment wounds that lead to challenges in relationships. She’ll help you understand the warning signs your body gives when getting into a triggered or overwhelmed state and teach you how to self-soothe so that you can have more productive and rational conversations with your partner. She will also help you understand and heal attachment wounding from your childhood or past relationships so you can have healthy and fulfilling relationships.
Hanna’s clients describe her as having a calming and nurturing presence while also giving them the hard truths when necessary. Her yoga students used to describe her as “The Velvet Hammer” and we think this is pretty accurate for her therapeutic work too. She’ll push you to the edge of your comfort zone but with a gentleness that makes sure you never get hurt.
Hanna identifies as an ally for BIPOC and the LGBTQ+ community and she actively engages in her own anti-racism work to check her privilege and the potential impact this could have on her clinical work.
“My passion lies in helping couples overcome challenges to create healthy relationships, helping parents navigate the ups and downs of parenthood, and supporting individuals to move past attachment trauma so they may connect and thrive in the safe and healthy relationships they deserve.”
