Laura Cotterman is an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor specializing in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. Laura is skilled in working with individuals and couples who have difficulty getting in touch with and communicating their emotions. For these individuals, emotional expression can feel confronting and threatening, causing the nervous system to go on high alert or causing them to shut down. Laura works with her clients on ways to soothe the nervous system through becoming aware of your thoughts, behaviors and body’s cues to help you think and communicate clearly and confidently. Laura works from the perspective that our previous relationship and family history can impact our expectations, beliefs, and behavior in relationships and will help you understand how this might be creating challenges or unwanted repeating patterns for you.
My Approach & Values
Laura has been working with individuals and couples since 2018 and is currently completing her supervised clinical hours for licensure as a Professional Clinical Counselor. She is being supervised by Couples Learn founder, Dr. Sarah Schewitz, who she meets with weekly to discuss client sessions. This means that when you work with Laura, you get the benefit of two therapists collaborating about the best way to help you!
Laura has advanced training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, an evidence-based therapy that helps couples identify their conflict cycle and work together to identify and meet the underlying attachment needs causing their conflict. She will help you identify and express the needs and desires that aren’t being met in your relationship and identify the cycle of conflict that arises from these unmet needs. You’ll also explore how your past influences you and how you show up in a relationship. Lastly, she will teach you healthier ways of communicating so that you and your partner can conquer your conflict and recognize and meet each other’s attachment needs. Through this work, new and beautiful ways of relating emerge.
Prior to completing her masters in counseling, Laura worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District for 10 years, starting as a teacher and then becoming a school counselor. Teaching and counseling children for a decade taught Laura the importance of healthy attachment in one’s family of origin when it comes to creating healthy relationships with others and with oneself. She believes healthy relationships create a safe base from which the adults and children in families can self-actualize and thrive.
Laura believes that the therapeutic relationship is a catalyst for deep, lasting change that can provide safety for you to explore past trauma, unmet attachment needs, and negative relationship patterns. She will support you through the use of emotional exploration, mindfulness, and tuning into your body to create a safe and welcoming environment for change. Laura’s clients and colleagues describe her as empathetic, attentive, authentic, nonjudgemental and kind.
“It takes courage to reach out for help when things aren’t going well. I feel so privileged to help people grow, rebuild, and maintain fulfilling relationships. I get so excited for my clients when I see them soften towards each other or reach out to one another in ways they couldn’t before.”
