Laura Cotterman is a Registered Associate Professional Clinical Counselor specializing in working with couples to improve their communication and emotional connection. She uses Gottman Method Couples Therapy to provide you with research based skills and knowledge to help you build the relationship you want. She also works from an attachment perspective to help you look at how your past relationships and family history influence how you show up and what you expect in your current relationship.
My Approach & Values
Laura uses the research backed Gottman Method Couples Therapy approach to teach you healthier ways of communicating and being in a relationship together. The work you will do with Laura includes learning better conflict management, expressing needs in a healthy way, building and maintaining a friendship with your partner, and sharing appreciation and affection for one another. She will help you explore negative relationship patterns, past hurts, and underlying issues in a safe and controlled environment where you both can learn how to share vulnerably and truly understand and empathize with each other.
Laura is skilled in working with people who have difficulty getting in touch with and communicating their emotions. For these people, emotional expression can feel confronting or threatening, causing the nervous system to go on high alert or causing them to shut down. Laura works with her clients on ways to soothe the nervous system, to use their body cues to connect to their emotions, and to share their thoughts and emotions.
Laura has been working with individuals and couples since 2018 and is currently completing her supervised clinical hours for licensure as a Professional Clinical Counselor. She is being supervised by Couples Learn founder, Dr. Sarah Schewitz, who she meets with weekly to discuss client sessions. This means that when you work with Laura, you get the benefit of two therapists collaborating about the best way to help you!
After completing her masters in counseling, Laura worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District for 10 years, including 6 years as a school counselor. Working with children for a decade taught Laura the importance of healthy attachment in one’s family of origin when it comes to creating healthy relationships with others and with oneself. She believes healthy relationships create a safe base from which individuals can self-actualize and thrive.
Laura’s clients and colleagues describe her as empathetic, attentive, authentic, non-judgemental and kind. She provides gentle support to her clients as they explore their emotions, practice new skills, and tune in to their body’s cues.
“It takes courage to reach out for help when things aren’t going well. I feel so privileged to help people grow, rebuild, and maintain fulfilling relationships. I get so excited for my clients when I see them soften towards each other or reach out to one another in ways they couldn’t before.”
